Best Friends: Blaze and Me
Blaze was brought into my life and it was love at first sight for me. As a child I always wanted a horse of my own so, if I had to wait until I was grown there could not have be a better friend.
The Sorrell gelding was lame, thin, and he was sixteen years old. He was ridden on the asphalt and cement by the sixteen year old girl who owned him. At this time I was married with two little boys, aged four and a baby, we lived in Los Angeles in a place called Monterey Hills. Our house was located at the end of a fire road so our front year was rolling hills and lovely view. Blaze was offered to us for $35 (this was 1971) so we took him in and built a corral next to our house and the grape arbor, which he loved to eat from.
As I worked with this sweet animal, rubbing his leg with Absorbine Jr®, giving him baths, and some really good food, he pretty much made a complete recovery. This led to great times with our best friends Pam and Diamond (a beautiful back mare) along the Arroyo Seco Parkway; we even took English riding lessons and learned to jump some hurdles.
When the time came that I could no longer care for him I retired him to a great ranch, I found up north, to live out the rest of his life. Blaze was truly a treasure in my life.
