Bring On the Race Zenyatta
The truth of the matter is I love to draw all kinds of horses, and I know the plight of racehorses is not a positive one. They are bred for speed now and not for endurance. That is the reason we see so many more accidents that are tragic on the track. But the challenge of drawing the action, wind, and muscles is exciting. And the jockey riding on top was another new challenge that concurred with my ongoing quest of capturing the moment.
This illustration of Zenyatta was a labor of love. I went to see this beautiful athlete at the track to watch her 13th undefeated consecutive race in Oak Tree’s Lady’s Secret Stakes on Oct. 10, 2009, at Santa Anita. I felt she has owners that really care about this animal. It just showed as I watched everyone around this horse, which gave me a positive outlook for these horses. Zenyatta was voted “Horse of the Meet” when she won the Milady and Vanity in 2008 at Hollywood Park.
After finishing this illustration, I decided to do a series of racehorses. So watch more, to come!
