Family in the Sierras
This family pack of wolves is a beautiful sight and the sound of the wild is filled with spirit. I love drawing and painting these free spirits of the land.
A pack can occupy a territory from fifty to one thousand miles. Within this area they will cull out the sick, old, weak, and parasite infested for food; only killing the healthy prey if food is scarce. For this reason, destroying these animals with aerial kills and setting traps; going into dens and killing pups is corrupting the balance of nature.
Some young wolves leave the pack around two years old to find a mate and start their own family. They have been found to travel five hundreds mile to do so.
This painting was inspired by an old calendar by Art Wolfe.
