Perfect Landing: Snowy Owl
The Snowy Owl, a Bird of Prey, is a fierce defender of their nest, even from wolves. The nests are vulnerable as they nest on the ground on the tundra, fields, and beaches.
We usually assume owls are nocturnal, not the Snowy Owl. This one sleeps at night and feeds during the dawn and dusk of the day. This can reduce competition for food. They feed on lemmings — the first on the list, also rabbits, mice, fish, and other birds.
A Snowy Owl's life span in captivity is about 28 years; however, it is reduced to about 15 years in the wild due to collisions with cars, electrical lines, and gunshot wounds. In addition, they are illegally killed for trade in the Asian markets. These birds are nomadic moving from Alaska in the Aleutian Islands, to northeastern Quebec and Canada. This owl has been found as far south as California and Texas.
What a beautiful bird to paint and draw.
