Anatomy Of A Pet Portrait

Finished Custom Pet Portrait

Custom Pet Portrait In Pencil

Here is the finished custom pet portrait, all matted and framed for my client. Didn’t win anything at my San Fernando Valley Art Club Mini Show that we have every month in our meeting. But I am very happy with it and can’t wait for my client to pick it up today. Hope you like it too. On to the next pencil drawing or watercolor creation for our December show at Gallery 800.

Final Pet Portrait

October 29th

Today I finished Adrian’s Kids; I had a lot of drawing and smudging this custom pet portrait. After examining, the pet portrait there was some areas that needed me to use the kneaded eraser to achieve more highlights. It is important not to overwork your drawing there is always a tendency to keep going, know when to stop and this is true for pencil drawings, and especially watercolor paintings, there is no going back on watercolor!Next, I will spray fix and double mat and frame for my client. Then delivery of this custom pet portrait is complete.

Almost Done With Pet Portrait

October 27th

At one time working on so much background would not have been a choice I would have made, but this particular photo given to me for a custom gave me a challenge I really am enjoying. Seeing it come to life and capturing the shadows and shapes I find very relaxing.

So at this point in this life like pencil pet portrait I am close to the finish line. After completing the couch, the shadows under the Chihuahua and doggie bed will finish this pet portrait and it will be ready for Spray Fixative, them on to Matting and Framing the Pet Drawing for my client.

Getting the Props right!

 October 20th

Drawing these two little Chihuahua Pet Portraits have been so much fun, this custom pencil pet portrait is moving in the right direction, I will easily meet my deadline.

Now I am working on the other components in the drawing and much more complex than the two dogs, so much shading, and tones to capture. The Smudge Stick (Tortillon) gets a real work out along with the kneaded eraser used to grab highlights.

I use Prismacolor Turquoise graphite pencils and always have. My favorite is the 5B and used 80% of the time when I draw any pencil portrait. Next is 4B and HB for details toward the end of the drawing. Any quality drawing paper will work well I have used Canson 90lb Classic Cream Drawing Paper, with a medium tooth surface.  Tomorrow more background and shading, please comment and give your insights I would love to read them.    Joette

Step Three Getting The Dogs Right

October 17th

The technique I use in creating my realistic pet portraits is to get the subjects (dog or cat etc.) to my liking before working on the background or any other elements in the drawings. Remember Pet Art is very personal to the owner.

Graphite Pencil is my favorite medium for custom pet portraits as I like the control you have. Plus using a Smudge Stick (Tortillon is the French word) is my favorite tool.

The next step will be to spray with workable fixative and start on the dog bed. Step three in creating my realistic pet portrait.

Drawing no. two of dark shadows and setting details.

The next thing I like to do is to sketch in the darkest places on the dogs and start sharpening up some details. The details most important are the eyes and nose, as for me they are the most difficult to capture. Black animals are the most difficult as you need to work in a reverse mind set use the kneaded eraser to pull out highlights.

I Just receive another Pet Portrait Commission and thought it would be interesting for me to  show how I work and the progress as I work on it. It is set up so you can blog me and join me in my journey to capture someones beloved pets in art. So we will call this Anatomy Of A Pet Portrait.

The first step once the photo and information as to size and medium are received is to get the sketch laid out. I know this is a little hard to see as the pencil sketch is light so I darkened the photo.

Throughout the awesome scheme of things you actually secure a B- with regard to effort and hard work. Where exactly you lost everybody ended up being on your particulars. As as the maxim goes, the devil is in the details… And that couldn’t be much more accurate here. Having said that, let me reveal to you what did do the job.
